For families, the Kirroughtree Visitor Centre near Newton Stewart (2 miles from Barrhill Farm Cottages) is the perfect place to explore the Galloway Forest and includes a children's adventure playground.

The Visitor Centre also has a bike hire shop and the forest features the best mountain biking trails outside North America. Also nearby, you can take part in zorbing (mountainballing), blokarting, grass sledging, clay pigeon shooting, Segway tours and tank driving!

At Creetown (5 miles from Barrhill Farm Cottages), there is a Gem Rock Museum.

Newton Stewart (1 mile from Barrhill Farm Cottages) has a museum and a first-class cinema.

Wigtown, Scotland's National Book Town (6 miles from Barrhill Farm Cottages), is the perfect place for book lovers and ornithologists. The Osprey Visitor Centre is situated in the town's County Buildings.

Port William (18 miles from Barrhill Farm Cottages) features some beautiful coastline and sandy beaches at nearby Monreith.
